Balle de Mode’s interview with what-do-i-wear:

balledemode: I had a chance to interview one of the most amazing contributors to this Internet revolution of Tumblr Fashion, who has been deemed one of the many famous Tumblr blogs out there - Danielle Willis. She runs both l a v e l a u n d r y & what-do-i-wear! Both of which these blogs showcase inspirational fashion posts on a daily basis.

balledemode: Tell me a bit about your blog? How many followers do you have?

Danielle:  I launched ‘lavelaundry’ in September of 2010 on Tumblr, I previously had started on Blogspot in July of 2010. It is my daily inspiration board - showing color, interior design, clothing, and architecture. ‘lavelaundry’ is a collection of images that showcase my idea of what beauty is. It’s more personal now then ever. My current follower count is 5,545.

I went on to started my second blog ‘what-do-i-wear’ on December 5th 2010; it was originally a private account where I stored outfit ideas, D.I.Y. inspirations, and trends that I want to challenge. After about a month or so I made it public, and it really just took off from there - other Tumblr users really responded well to the content! I began receiving frequent questions, submission posts, and emails. I’m really thankful for all the positive feedback and opportunities that have come from it and I currently have a follower count of 88,670.

balledemode: Many people use Tumblr as a different persona, how much of your fashion blog actually reflects your own style?

Danielle: ‘lavelaundry’ is all things that represent me in some way or another; it’s truly a collage of my interpretation of beauty through images.

‘what-do-i-wear’ can change depending on my mood and what brands, styles, and trends I’m looking into at a specific moment, and other influences that I am stumbling over that inspire style. All of the content that is uploaded on what-do-i-wear I find inspiring so I would say it is a strong representation of how I am and how I like to dress.

balledemode: Why do you think many aspiring fashion bloggers opt to start off with a Tumblr account rather than a Wordpress, Blogspot etc account?

Danielle: From my experience I started out on blogspot initially and then moved my way onto the Tumblr platform. I find that most of the blogs that I currently follow are working off of blogspot and other platforms as well.

balledemode: What sort of fashion posts do you find yourself drawn to the most? Editorials? Street fashion?

Danielle: For ‘lavelaundry’ it’s always been a fashion and editorial based blog.

‘what-do-i-wear’ is very street style orientated, lots of product shots, and focuses on promoting other bloggers that share my general interest.

balledemode: Is there anything that disappoints you in regards to modern society’s thoughts/opinions/perspective on fashion now a days?

Danielle: If I had to pick one thing to change it would be this ‘idea’ of the fashion industry having limitations, and more specifically related to clothing and different body types. After receiving several messages and emails from women regarding their body type, that ask me what specific items they should be wearing to best suit their height, weight, skin color, and hair…

It’s saddening to see this question so often as it shows that women are less experimental with clothing and the way they express themselves now. I believe fashion , is a way to express yourself and experiment. There is no formula for every body type on how to dress. There are obviously different cuts, and style that are more flattering on one body type than another, although these do’s and don’ts shouldn’t limit you entirely. If you want to wear something then you should regardless if that garment isn’t promoted to your particular body type. I would encourage you to always try it out, and decide that for yourself. If you’re 5’11 or 5’0 and want to wear a maxi skirt then you should go for it! I feel as though a lot of women deprive themselves from wearing certain styles because it hasn’t been marketed to there specific body type. Sometimes you just need to go for it, there are always ways you can work a garment to fit your body type.

balledemode: If there were only one sole reason as to why your followers are attracted to your blog, what do you think it would be?

Danielle: For ‘lavelaundry’ I would have to say it’s because it offers a wide range of imagery, and content that is pleasing to the eye.

‘what-do-i-wear’ is an ever changing inspiration board of style that aims to display all things current. Offering you style awareness, the latest product and ways-to-wear different items.

GO TRY IT ON's Interview with Danielle Willis of 'What Do I Wear?'

For this Fashion Week Friday Focus, we bring you Danielle Willis, a 20-year-old Canadian who launched What Do I Wear? after the need to better manage her folders of papers that inspire. She spends on basics, saves on jewelry and works to break her own fashion rules—as she says, some of the best pictures come from the nights you push yourself. Chat with Danielle on Twitter and add her as your personal stylist for daring feedback on your look.

GO TRY IT ON: When was What What Do I Wear? born and how has it evolved into a photo gallery of style?

DANIELLE: December 5, 2010. I needed to store the images I collected for inspiration and had an overflow of folders that needed management.

GO TRY IT ON: The photos you showcase are a fabulous collage. How do you pick and choose what “makes it”?

DANIELLE: I don’t have a set of guidelines to follow. The photos featured area a result of my mood and outfits but one thing’s for sure, they must be high quality and reflect the individuals personality. Something that tells a story.

GO TRY IT ON: How often do you check out your blog for outfit inspiration?

DANIELLE: Not as often as I used to…my blog isn’t enough for me anymore. I search for new concepts to share.

GO TRY IT ON: Have you ever tried out a trend you spotted and it just didn’t work?

DANIELLE: I’m pretty ambitious so if I see something I want to try, I go for it. If a style doesn’t work for my body or the color is wrong, I do it anyways. Break the rules! Women don’t do it enough and I try and push my readers to do so.

GO TRY IT ON: What questions do your readers have for you regarding style and how to dress?

DANIELLE: Height and weight—how to better suit their body type and my response is always the same. If you’re 5’11 or 5’0 and want to wear a maxi skirt, do it. There are always ways to work with a style so that it can suit anyone.

GO TRY IT ON: What is the most daring outfit you’ve worn?

DANIELLE: For my 18th birthday I wore a low cut dress (in the back and front) in ivory by BCBG and paired it with the Elizabeth & James ‘Mason’ pumps. Adding a red lip (plus my white blonde hair at the time.) I was hesitant but left my nerves at the door and never looked back, some of my favorite photos are from that night. I’m glad I challenged my own rules.

GO TRY IT ON: What are you most excited to wear for spring?

DANIELLE: My vintage floral pieces that I can’t wait to bring back out. I love light, delicate fabrics like lace, silk, crochet and chiffons—they always work well with a structured men’s blazer.

GO TRY IT ON: What was your last purchase?

DANIELLE: Single strap heels from Zara and the Pascal floral print boot by Doc Marten.

GO TRY IT ON: What stores (both on and offline) get most of your business?

DANIELLE: Haute LookUrban OutfittersMod Cloth, Nasty GalFree PeoplePLNDRKaramaloop,Sole StruckAkiraASOSNeed Supply Co.80’s PurpleZaraMy CatwalkPixie Market…the list goes on.

GO TRY IT ON: What is the most important piece to spend on and what can you save on?

DANIELLE: I’m a forever investor in basics. Trends keep things interesting but there’s nothing like reaching for my favorite Acne black jeans, James Pearce tee. Spend less on jewelry and more on jeans, leathers, footwear and handmade goods (but those are items you can always save on too).
